This reference guide is based on every 4th

Formula for sizing softeners
Capacity = No. of People x
Hardness x 70 Gallons x Days
Between Regeneration |
Ex: A family has 4 people with 33 grains per
gallon hardness with no iron.
4 + 1(for appliances) x 33 Grains/Gal. x 70
Gallons x 4 Days = 46,200 Grains. In this
example, 46,200 grains of capacity is needed
on average every 4 days. Because no iron is
present, the low salt setting can be used.
Select the softener that will provide more
than 46,200 grains at the low salt setting.
A water softener will remove clear water
iron (iron in solution). When removing iron
with a softener, compensate the hardness by
a factor of 5 grains per gallon for every
part per million of iron.
Ex: A family has 3 people with 22 grains per
gallon hardness and 3 parts per million
iron.
3 + 1(for appliances) x 37 Grains/Gal. x 70
Gallons x 2 Days = 20,720 Grains. In this
example, 20,720 grains of capacity is needed
on average every 2 days. With iron present,
the softener should regenerate every other
night and use the medium salt setting.
Select the softener that will provide more
than 21,000 grains at the medium salt
setting

The Ampac™ Water Softeners
are manufactured as all our other products in our factory in
the USA using the highest quality components
based on the legendary Fleck control valves, the most
respected name in the industry. We build your softener based
on your water usage patterns and the hardness of your water.
Water Softeners are sized in grains per gallon (gpg). You
may see softeners rated as 32,000 grains. One grain equals
17.1 ppm or mg/liter. So if your water has 10 grains of
hardness it is equivalent to 170.1 mg/liter. The more grains
of hardness your water has, the more frequently the softener
needs to regenerate. It is important to size your softener
properly to prevent excessive regeneration. A certain amount
of salt goes down the drain with every regeneration. Based
on the legendary Fleck control valves, the most respected
name in the industry.
Larger softeners are more
salt efficient as they regenerate less often. Our standard
home units come with a Fleck 5600 Econominder valve. This
valve is the industry standard for all home water softeners.
The 5600 Econominder measures your water usage and
regenerates only when necessary. The optional 6700 valve
adds a computer microprocessor interface while maintaining
the same basic reliable internals as the 5600 valve.
The 6700 microprocessor
controlled valve allows more flexibility in programming the
unit. You can adjust the length of the backwash cycle, or
salt used in each regeneration. In addition to residential
softeners, we make softening systems Commercial & Industial

design with a Six Cycle, long lasting Noryl valve.
The separate Brine Tank can be located away from the Resin
Tank allowing the system to be installed in smaller spaces.
The Ampac (S) Softener Series, with the Six cycle
Fleck Econominder Control Valve monitors the water usage
and cleans itself automatically, assuring minimum salt and
water usage during the cleaning process. |

Water Softeners:
What does a water softener do?
A water softener is plumbed into the entry of the house. It
removes calcium and magnesium from the water and exchanges it for sodium
or potassium, depending upon which type of salt you use.
How much maintenance does a
water softener require?
Water softeners are self maintaining. They measure the amount of water
used and
regenerate at 2 A.M. by back flushing and running salt through the
system to remove the hardness minerals. All you need to do is add salt
once a month.
What is the difference between
a water softener and a whole house carbon treatment system?
A water softener is plumbed into the entry of the house. It removes
calcium and magnesium from the water and exchanges it for sodium or
potassium, depending upon which type of salt you use. A whole house
carbon system has at least a cubic foot of carbon in a tank similar to a
softener tank with similar type of control valve. The carbon reduces
chlorine taste, odor, color
from the water in your sinks, showers, and faucets.
There are lower
priced systems that use 20" Big Blue Housings. With those systems you
have to change a 20" X 4" cartridge once a year. Those Granule Active
Coconut Shell Carbon Cartridges (GAC) cost $ 58.00
